PACS (picture archive and communications system) is a rich source of
teaching and research material, yet the potential for PACS to
support non-clinical applications has not been fully realised. MIRC
(Medical Image Resource Center) is a new central
repository that defines standards
for data exchange between institutes worldwide. In
collaboration with the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (IBE), we
have built a computer server that retrieves DICOM images from PACS,
converts them to JPEG, and creates neurological disease databases,
including ACR code indices. We test-populated the databases with
teaching file cases from the PACS caseload of NNI Singapore.
Together, PACS and MIRC have great potential to benefit radiology
teaching, research
and clinical support.
